Project Kal-EL – New Quad Core from Nvidia
>By James Lenhart
If you listened to last weeks podcast, you probably heard us talking about a quad core processor due to release from Texas Instruments. Even though that news is roughly a few weeks old or less, forget everything we were excited about. Today at MWC, Nvidia dropped the bomb with their new Project Kal-EL quad core processor, and plans to shut down the mobile processing market for the next 3 years.
Built into this new processor is a 12 core GPU that is capable of rendering Extreme HD quality picture at a resolution of 2560×1600. Talk about some serious horsepower. Apparently this thing will dominate an Intel Core 2 Duo in a benchmark shown at MWC.
So, you’re probably wondering when this going to come out. Well, how about this August? Yea, that’s right, Nvidia will have these in tablets by August, and in phones at the end of 2011.
At MWC, Nvidia showed working prototypes just to prove that this is not a bluff. They’ve also compiled a schedule of release for the next 3 years, with the final release codenamed “Stark”. Stark is supposed to be 100x times more powerful than the Tegra 2 chipset.
